2nd ASEAN HUMAN RESOURCES CONFERENCE

25th MAY 2010, HA NOI, VIETNAM

 ASEAN Labour Ministers

ASEAN Labour Ministers

With the theme "Development of human resources for the economic recovery and development", the conference focused on discussing the possibilities for cooperation of ASEAN in three areas: 1) Managing human resources for economic recovery and development from the policy level, 2) Towards a harmonized ASEAN Competency - Based Skills Standards, 3) Development of Effective Skills Strategies in ASEAN. This is an important forum for ASEAN Labour Ministers and stakeholders to share experiences and strengthen cooperation on human resources development.

ASETUC was invited to bring in the conference the new perspective of trade union. Mr Christopher Ng, the Regional Secretary of UNI-Apro and Advisor to ASETUC said in the conference: "... the social partners must work in partnership based on effective and fair human resources management approaches and practices in an economically feasible manner for all stakeholders in each relevant sector - motivated by the shared vision of the social partners, through a process of participatory, sincere and transparent social dialogue". The principle of working in partnership and promoting social dialogue to strengthen human resources is also reiterated by different presenters. At the end of his speech, Christopher provided a new dimension to the tripartism in the region: "As I have repeatedly reminded trade union leaders and members: Rights come with responsibility. Trade unions must build up their capacity to contribute to the productivity and the strengthening of the regional human resources."
