ASETUC/ FES TRAIN THE TRAINERS
17th – 21st November 2009 - Grand Flora Hotel, Jakarta, Indonesia
After the success of ASETUC Bangkok Conference to present the findings of 3 research studies on Healthcare, Construction and Finance, ASETUC continued to realize its action plan as to conduct a regional level workshop “Train the Trainers” with the presence of Phil Drew (Union Trainer, f.e. for ILO and diverse GUFs in Asia-Pacific region). 16 trade union leaders nominated by the 3 GUFs (BWI, PSI & UNI-Apro) from 5 ASEAN countries, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand & Vietnam attended the intensive training workshop in Jakarta from 17th to 21st November. The training workshop aims to develop educational secretaries from these 5 countries to prepare for national training workshop in the coming year 2010. A training book was prepared in advance which includes various fact sheets to equip trade unionists with adequate knowledge and information about ASEAN Integration Process, Stake Holders in ASEAN, ASEAN+3 & ASEAN+6 Community, ASETUC Recommendation and lobby work, etc.
First day – ASEAN Focus
Kun Wardana gave an introduction to ASETUC and ASEAN trade union landscape, its relations with ASEAN / CSOs as well as into core strategies and expectations of public relations campaign.
Magdalene gave a brief introduction about the study “ASEAN Economic Integration and its Impacts on Workers and Trade Unions”, giving the emphasis on how ASETUC can take the initiative to contribute constructively to ASEAN Economic Integration Process as well as building up the trust and partnership.
Brother Georgios Altintzis, Advisor for Trade and International Labour Standards, International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), Brussels gave a presentation on “The G20 and the Role of Trade Unions”.
Second day – ASETUC Lobby Campaign
Union Trainer, Phil Drew gave a lecture on how ASETUC can prepare for a Lobbying Campaign and distributed the draft training book for the participants to have a group review and comments for improvement. Besides interesting teamwork game, participants were assigned different challenging tasks such to brainstorm on regional and national training strategy, on the approach to conduct social dialogue with the government, and on working in partnership with ILO and international stake holders, and to design a national training course using the standard training handbook.
Third day – Interface Dialogue with ASEC
ASETUC had a field trip visit to ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta and met up with Dr. Donald Tambunan, Head of Social Welfare, Women, Labour and Migrant Workers Division, ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community Dept., ASEAN Secretariat.
The visit was a success in which the ASEAN Secretariat shared with us the structure of ASEC and pointed out the areas that ASETUC can develop the partnership with ASEC as well as the process of accreditation of ASETUC to ASEAN.
Day 4
The participants got together in their nationality group and discussed about strategies and methodology as well as designing a sample training program in their own countries. We have the full commitments from the participants to follow up with the national training workshop for next year using the training handbook developed by union trainer, Mr Phil Drew.
